|Ilwareed Online – Mogadishu, 1 August, 2017: The Prime Minister of Somalia, HE Hasan Ali Khayre, has re-launched the faculty of Journalism and Communication of the National University of Somalia, today at the Ministry of Information, culture and Tourism.
“Journalism encourages development, realising national vision, boosting the good governance and helps produce and keep the unity of the nation” said Somali PM.
Prime Minister Kheyre went on to say that he feels proud to witness Somali National Uni-versity resumes its free services to the Somali people by educating thousands of Somali youth and producing graduates that are the leaders of tomorrow.
“The National University has registered up to one thousands and five hundred students so far. Though that is a new beginning, yet it is nowhere near the old days when the university was the main producer of Somalia’s graduates in their thousands” added H.E. Hasan Ali Kheyre.
The Prime Minister thanked all those who took part in the rehabilitation of the faculty of journalism and communications.
Present at the relaunching ceremony were the PM, the Minister of Information, Deputy Minister of Information, Deputy Minister of Education, former Ministers of Information (Mareye and Jahweyn), the Chairperson of the Sub Committee of the Parliament on Media & Telecom, Chairperson of the National University of Somalia, the Dean of the faculty of Journalism, representatives from the faculty and the national University, Somali media organisations, journalists, and members of parliament etc.
The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, H.E. Abdirahman Omar Osman, (Eng Yarisow), spoke about the importance in creating the faculty of Journalism and Communication and the need for it to add more quality to the journalism field.
“The Ministry of Information will take its role in ensuring the faculty fulfils its mandate. We were the main employers of the graduates from the faculty and we will continue to do so. Scholars at the Ministry will contribute to the provision and sharing knowledge to the faculty.” said Minister Abdirahman Yarisow.
The Minister of Information, added that the relaunching of the faculty of Journalism and Communication comes at a time that Somali cabinet has approved a reviewed media law which will soon be placed before the Federal parliament and Somali Media Strategy has been developed.
“This relaunch of the faculty will take a greater share of development of Somalia Media. This will in turn be an important tool to assist the good governance, accountability and the overall check and balance for Somalia.” added Minister Abdirahman Yarisow.
The faculty of Journalism and Communication of Somali National University was first es-tablished in 1979.
Since the collapse of the central government of Somalia in 1991, there was no government supported university in the country and so was the faculty of Journalism and Communication.
